DOI: 10.1177/092137409801000202 The Future of the PresentThinking through OrientalismUniversity of Ghent, Belgium This article tries to probe the phenomenon of post-Orientalism in order to answer the question: what next after Orientalism by Edward Said? Building further upon the insight that Orientalist discourse is the result of a particular form of constrained thinking, it argues that social sciences and Orientalism constrain each other. If that is the case, the consequences are immense for any further theorizing by the 'post-colonial' intellectuals.
