Reflections on Yeshayahu Leibowitz's Judaism, Human Values, and the Jewish State

Robert A. Sirico

The Acton Institute for the Study of Religion and Liberty, Michigan

This paper is an assessment of Yeshayahu Leibowitz's Judaism, Human Values, and the Jewish State. In this collection of essays, the highly prolific Jewish scholar argues for a radical separation of religion and the state. This radical point of departure is assessed for the consequences it has for a wide range of issues, especially the nature and limits of liberty as these relate to the discipline of economics. This is done by establishing a dialogue between some Jewish insights on these matters and a Christian perspective.
